Lasallian Volunteer experience Middle Swan

Shamus Horgan (St Michael’s Adelaide), Niko Lomana (De La Salle Mangere) and Ignacia Nheu (St John’s Dandenong) have settled in well to their volunteer placement at La Salle College Middle Swan. After quarantining in separate facilities, the three moved into a share house in the boarding facilities at La Salle College Middle Swan.

Each LV has commented on how hospitable and welcoming the Middle Swan community has been, especially Bernadette, who has added extra snacks to their Woolworths orders and Giovanna Fiume (Principal) and Rev Aaron Peters (Director of Mission), who have taken them out to dinner on occasion.

The highlight for the LVs has been working with the students in the Aboriginal Education Unit and taking them on excursions to places like Kings Park on the weekends. Each volunteer has become an older brother or sister in the boarding house; this often means lots of basketball games, colouring in mindful sheets and watching movies.

Whilst at school, the Volunteers operate as teacher assistants aiding students to get to class, assisting with completing tasks and ensuring students are engaging in the work.

When prompted to answer the question, “What has been your Holy Spirit moment” some of the responses were:

  • Seeing the kids smile
  • Feeling at home with the kids and having inside jokes. Their cheekiness.
  • Adventures around Perth and freedom - Being really welcomed by the Community
  • Learning about the Community
