The Superior General has arrived!

Brother Armin Luistro has arrived in Perth for his first visit to the District of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Pakistan since being elected Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in May of 2022. During his 17-day visit, he will be accompanied by Br Tim Peter (Br Visitor) and will visit Lasallian schools and works across Australia and New Zealand, as well as attend the Asia Pacific Lasallian Educators’ Conference (APLEC) at North Sydney.

Brother Armin attended De La Salle University in Manila. In April 1997, he joined the De La Salle Brothers and professed his first religious vows in October 1982. During his 40-year career, he has worked as a religious teacher, class counsellor, campus minister, university president, and Secretary of the Department of Education. He co-founded De La Salle University, Manado, Indonesia, with Josef Suwatan, and held several positions in governmental and intergovernmental organisations.

Before being elected Superior General, Br. Armin served as the Brother Visitor of the Lasallian District of East Asia (LEAD) for three years. As the Brother Superior General, he has the power to convene the General Chapter and an extraordinary General chapter as needed, assign posts of responsibility, and serve as the Institution's official representative.

Br. Armin began his tour of the District with a visit to La Salle College Middle Swan on Monday. La Salle was honoured to have Br. Armin, Br. Tim, Nan Roma Winmar, Vaughan McGuire and Vanessa Corunna as guests for the special occasion. After meeting with Principal Giovanna Fiume and senior staff members, Br. Armin attended a school assembly, where he was invited to speak to the students. After the assembly concluded, Br. Armin joined the faculty and students at the school's new yarning circle to witness the official opening ceremony conducted by local Aboriginal elders.

Highlighted through Br Armin’s presence, is that La Salle College in Middle Swan is part of a much larger Lasallian community, a world community. This community is a key feature of the education at La Salle and through their new Yarning Circle, the hope is for students and the local community to use the space to meet, share stories and learn culture to build stronger connections that ignite a sense of belonging not only in the Lasallian community but in the world community too. Br. Armin concluded his visit at the school by sharing morning tea with the staff and meeting with Lasallian Youth Ministers, Lasallian volunteers, and others engaged in promoting the Lasallian mission.

On Monday afternoon, Br. Armin travelled to Kununurra which was a stop-over point for his visit to the Wirrimanu Community and Luurnpa Catholic College in Balgo Hills on Tuesday and Wednesday. Upon arrival, Br. Armin met with Principal Rachel Smith and other staff members and visited Tjiriki (Year 1/2) class and Kipara (Year 5/6). In Tjiriki they joined the class for their Stations of the Cross Prayer Service and the children asked them questions about where they are from. Br Tim also led them in the “Br Tim dance”. The visit also included a staff meeting, meeting with local Church leaders, visiting the town' lookouts, learning about Balgo Hills' remote schools' attendance strategy and a presentation outlining the Student Well-Being program.

Today, Br. Armin will return to Perth and visit the Catholic Education Office on Friday before travelling to Auckland.

Brothers Ricky Laguda and Chris Patino (General Councillors) and Br Sergio Leal (Executive Secretary of the General Council) are scheduled to arrive in Australia or New Zealand in the next few days. A schedule has also been developed for these Brothers to visit Lasallian schools and works as well as attend the Asia Pacific Lasallian Educators Conference (APLEC).
