Lasallians Lead the Way in Supporting Domestic Violence Survivors
Oakhill College, a proud Lasallian school in Castle Hill, recently celebrated the outstanding contributions of its Year 10 and 11 students at the Walk the Talk Awards, held at Sydney’s Parliament House. These students were recognised for their unwavering commitment to supporting The Sanctuary, a women’s shelter in the Hills District, which provides crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.
Through their involvement in the Walk the Talk programme, these students have demonstrated how the Lasallian core values can translate into action, making a real difference in the lives of those in need. For years, the students have organised fundraising activities, such as cupcake sales and showbags, to support the shelter. In addition to raising vital resources, they have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of domestic violence in their school and broader community.
Founded in 2016, The Sanctuary is a six-bedroom refuge that offers safe, short-term accommodation to women and children fleeing domestic violence. The shelter provides not only a roof over their heads but also the emotional and practical support needed to rebuild their lives. Women and children are cared for with dignity, and special services are offered to those with disabilities or those caring for children with disabilities. The Sanctuary’s mission aligns with Lasallian values, particularly the call to stand in solidarity with the poor and victims of injustice, as it provides a safe haven for those experiencing the trauma of domestic violence.
At the heart of the Walk the Talk programme is a commitment to the Lasallian values of Concern for the Poor and Social Justice, Respect for All Persons, and Inclusive Community. By supporting The Sanctuary, Oakhill College students are embodying these values. They stand in solidarity with women and children affected by domestic violence, advocating for their dignity, and working to create a more just and compassionate world. The Walk the Talk programme calls students to recognise their responsibility to serve others, particularly those who are marginalised or suffering. This initiative provides students with a meaningful way to live out their faith, not just through prayer, but through action. Their commitment to social justice encourages them to see the world through the "eyes of faith", recognising the sacred dignity of every person, especially those who are vulnerable.
Moreover, the initiative fosters an Inclusive Community where students learn to respect and embrace one another’s differences. By supporting The Sanctuary, they engage in a communal effort to uplift those who need help most, creating a sense of belonging and respect that transcends the boundaries of their school community.
At Oakhill College, the Walk the Talk programme also reflects the Lasallian commitment to Quality Education. Through this initiative, students are not only learning the importance of social responsibility but are also developing practical skills in leadership, advocacy, and service. These young men are using their knowledge and talents to engage with and transform society in the light of the Gospel message—building a world where justice, compassion, and respect for all persons are at the forefront. By developing a media platform to spread awareness about domestic violence, these students are actively engaging with their education to create change and drive social progress. They are learning that education is not just about academic success but also about making a meaningful impact in the world around them.
The Walk the Talk initiative is a powerful example of how Lasallian values can inspire young people to live with purpose and compassion. Through their work with The Sanctuary, Oakhill College students are helping to provide shelter, support, and hope to those who need it most, all while embodying the Lasallian principles of faith, community, and service. As they continue to develop their advocacy efforts, the students are not just walking the talk—they are inspiring others to do the same. Through their actions, they are creating a lasting legacy of service and social justice that reflects the heart of Lasallian education.
