Nurturing Lasallian Values and Community Spirit

Oakhill College reflects on the vibrant events and achievements that define their efforts of late. From celebrating the legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle to fostering inclusivity and community service, Oakhill is committed to educating students, transforming lives and sustaining faith. Enjoy the highlights of the impactful initiatives and accomplishments that continue to shape the Oakhill community.

In solidarity with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, students took a stand against domestic violence, marching for change and raising awareness within the community. Their participation highlighted Oakhill's commitment to social responsibility and empathy.

Inclusivity Day saw students stepping into different shoes, literally and metaphorically, to foster empathy and inclusivity across campuses. This initiative reflects a dedication to creating a welcoming environment for all.

Weekly Wisdom Wednesdays provide moments of reflection and spiritual growth at the Chapel, uniting staff and students in prayer and contemplation.

Oakhill College's monthly shifts at the Ryde Vinnies Van Service were a significant addition to the community service efforts this year. This initiative, aligned with the St Vincent de Paul Society, emphasizing respect and compassion toward those in need, embodying Lasallian values in action.

In arts and culture, Oakhill proudly presented 'Mamma Mia' at the Pioneer Theatre, captivating sell out audiences and showcasing students' talents.

Academic enrichment remains a cornerstone at Oakhill, with initiatives like Reading Boost from the P.J. Walsh Library, which provides a wide range of reading materials and a conducive environment to instil a love for reading among students.

Oakhill’s commitment to personal growth and adventure was evident as 29 Gold Duke of Edinburgh students conquered the Adventurous Journey component during the recent school holidays. Their resilience and teamwork were truly inspiring as they tackled the challenges of summiting Mt Kosciuszko and trekking the Schlink Walking Trail, demonstrating the strength and unity of the student body.

Reflecting a global outlook, students from Years 9 and 10 embarked on a transformative journey through Vietnam, exploring its history and culture firsthand, as well as working in villages. The money staff and students raised prior to the trip has enabled the purchase of materials needed to build and furnish new accommodation. They completed the work so quickly and thoroughly that more materials were ordered and picked up, so they could continue on and do more than anticipated. The boys are thrilled to witness the tangible impact of their efforts, seeing firsthand the difference they can make in the lives of others.

This experience not only broadened their horizons but also strengthened their commitment to shaping global citizens.

Closer to home, Oakhill leaders participated in the 'Young Lasallians Evening' at La Salle Catholic College, Bankstown, fostering connections and discussions on faith, service and community.

The community's generosity shone brightly during the Red Shield Appeal, where students raised over $4,500. This significant contribution will greatly support the Salvation Army's ongoing efforts.

Sports achievements continue to soar at Oakhill, with teams excelling in ISA competitions and preparing eagerly for the winter sports season. Gala Day 2024 was a resounding success as a fundraiser, showing a strong community spirit and support for causes like The Breakfast Club at La Salle Technical College in Papua New Guinea. They also take pride in celebrating the achievements of alumni, such as Daniel Tamone, Class of 2007, whose novel 'The Fists of the Fathers' delves deep into Western Sydney's boxing culture. Samantha Dale, Class of 2019, also continues to shine in athletics, recently winning the long jump at the Oceania Championships.

These achievements are a testament to the lasting impact of a Lasallian education. At Oakhill College, these achievements and initiatives reflect a commitment to fostering a community where Lasallian values of respect, compassion and service thrive, preparing students to impact the world positively.
