Francis Douglas Memorial College: Celebrating Faith, Service, and Community
In the heart of New Plymouth, Francis Douglas Memorial College (FDMC) stands as a beacon of faith, service, and community. Guided by the courageous spirit of Father Francis Douglas and the Lasallian tradition, the college has been thriving as a nurturing Catholic institution since 1959. Here’s a glimpse into the vibrant life and achievements at FDMC over the past six months.
Celebrating Faith
The academic year began with a significant Year 7 retreat themed “Jesus and Me,” which provided new students with a warm introduction to the school. This retreat allowed students to bond with their Year 13 'big brothers' and explore the school's spiritual ethos. The experience was enriched by an anointing liturgy and a subsequent camping trip, laying a strong spiritual foundation for the new students.
The Year 8 retreat, centred on “Choices,” was designed to help students understand and discern God's guidance in their everyday decisions. Meanwhile, the Year 10 retreat focused on faith, service, and community, inspiring students to reflect on their roles and contributions to the world around them.
The community also came together for the Mass of the Oils at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, which deepened their connection to the sacraments and reinforced their spiritual journey throughout the year.
Service and Community Engagement
FDMC's commitment to service was prominently displayed during the Shave to Save event, which raised an impressive $22,000. This fundraising effort also included an exciting chilli-eating competition, demonstrating the community’s enthusiastic support and engagement in charitable activities.
Service was also evident in the college's agricultural initiatives. The construction of a new shade house for the nursery and the success of agriculture students at the Rural Games reflect the school’s commitment to practical learning and community development. The garden at the Ag Dome is able to supply our community’s FoodBank with fresh vegetables at various times through the year.
The FDMC Gala, which raised over $60,000 for a new gymnasium, celebrated the collective efforts of students, staff, and families, showcasing the strength and unity of the school community in achieving shared goals. Work on the gymnasium is all set to begin and the area has been cordoned off in readiness for a multitude of workers and equipment.
Academic and Sporting Achievements
Academically and athletically, FDMC students have excelled. Notably, Clarence Chan won the Best Speaker award at the CNI Debating Competition, highlighting the high calibre of Lasallian students. The school also welcomed Haru, an exchange student from Japan, enriching the cultural diversity within the college community.
In sports, FDMC students demonstrated remarkable talent and spirit at the TSSSA events, competing in mountain biking, surfing, and beach volleyball. Despite facing stiff competition, the tennis team showcased perseverance and team spirit.
A Commitment to Attendance and Wellbeing
Under the theme “Christo Duce,” FDMC underscores the importance of regular school attendance as fundamental to academic success and community cohesion. The school’s initiative to monitor and support attendance has been effective, helping students build positive habits and strengthen their connections to both their peers and their learning.
The college works closely with parents to address attendance issues, ensuring that every student can fully benefit from their educational experience. This approach reflects FDMC’s dedication to fostering resilience and active participation among its students.
Looking Forward
As FDMC continues to enrich its community through faith, service, and academic achievement, recent events and successes highlight the school’s vibrant spirit and commitment to holistic development. With an exciting Argentina Exchange on the horizon, the college is set for further growth and unity.
Francis Douglas Memorial College stands as a testament to how faith, service, and community can converge to create a supportive and thriving educational environment. As the school year progresses, the Lasallian community looks forward to more opportunities for students to grow, learn, and positively impact their world.
