Br Naqash Sarfraz's Perpetual Profession Marks a Significant Milestone for De La Salle Congregation

On the momentous day of Saturday, 25th November 2023, a historic event unfolded at the Chapel of De La Salle College in Mangere East. Br Naqash Sarfraz, a devoted member of the De La Salle Brothers, celebrated his Perpetual Profession, marking a significant milestone in his journey.

This significant milestone represents the culmination of years of preparation, formation and discernment, signifying his desire to fully embrace the vocation of a religious Brother and devote himself to serving others.

Br Naqash, hailing from Khusphur, Pakistan, joined the Brothers in September 2009 and has been actively involved in a two-year immersion experience in New Zealand since January 2023.

Br Naqash explained his choice of having the event in New Zealand, saying "Something should be different since our district is ANZPPNG."

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Brother Tim Peter (Br Visitor), Brothers Sajid Bashir (Pakistan Sector Coordinator), Peter Abraham and Amir Raza from Pakistan, Brothers Michael Carroll, Lewis Harwood and Peter Ryan from Australia, Brother Thomas Yapo from Papua New Guinea along with Brothers Jack Iremonger and Pat Lynch (New Zealand Sector Coordinator) from Aotearoa New Zealand.

The celebrant for the event was Father Martin Wu, the College Chaplain, accompanied by priests from the local area. Notably, the New Zealand Sector Council, led by Anna Zsigovitz, played an active role and the students of De La Salle College extended a haka welcome. Additionally, a significant contingent of staff and students from Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth and John Paul College in Rotorua joined the participants from Auckland’. Reflecting on the event, Br Naqash expressed, 'It is a special event in my life where Brothers gathered from four various countries: Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea. The presence of lay partners, teachers and students truly makes a great difference in the uniqueness of the Lasallian culture.'

Br. Naqash gave a speech where he shared his family background and vocation story. He mentioned how he was born into a large family with modest means and often contemplated the randomness of birth. “Our aspirations often didn't extend beyond securing basic education and surviving day-to-day. Each night, I would lie in bed, lost in thoughts about the randomness of birth—why some are born into affluence while others toil in obscurity.” However, a pivotal moment with his teachers and principal changed his life's course, and their support became the foundation of his future achievements.

He described his life as a rollercoaster of highs and lows that taught him resilience and revealed his hidden strengths. “These challenging times have been instrumental in my self-discovery and in unearthing my potential and abilities.” Br Naqash said that despite financial challenges, the support of his teachers and principal allowed him to excel academically and participate in extracurricular activities.

Br Naqash highlighted his journey as a De La Salle Brother and his passion for education. He said "From childhood, I was torn between two callings: a life of religious service to humanity and the pursuit of education. In 2009, upon completing my school education, I made the choice to join the De La Salle Brothers, embracing a religious life while furthering my commitment to education. I became a De La Salle Brother to work in God's vineyard, teaching the Gospel through education, especially to marginalised children”.

Looking back, Br Naqash explained, "My favourite highlight as a Brother has been the opportunity to inspire children by being an example or role model for them. Witnessing their growth and development and knowing that I've played a part in shaping their lives is truly fulfilling."

The Perpetual Profession of Br Naqash marked a moment of great joy and celebration for the entire Lasallian community. With his unwavering commitment, Br Naqash will continue to inspire others and serve as an example of the enduring mission of the Brothers.

Looking towards the future, Br Naqash shared his aspirations. "My desire is to create more possibilities for underprivileged children to receive an education and lead a better life, particularly those from slum areas," he stated. "I believe that education is a powerful tool that can transform lives and uplift communities."
